Ill to school?

Posted on | March 10, 2010 | No Comments

Today an extra meeting was called because so many children are ill.
We decided to add a few groups together as long as a certain number of pupils isn’t in.

That frees teachers for other tasks, and some can even a few days off.
A few teachers that live nearby are on call every morning so they can take classes until their own teacher is available again.

It was settled very fast and I was ready to go when suddenly a discussion was started.
Many moms work and when their children are ill they just send them to school.
It’s the main cause of this sudden increase of ill children.
Only when their child is too ill they stay at home, but by that time they have infected many other children.

One of the older teachers said that she didn’t mind as long as there were no “accidents” of puking and other sorts of dirt.
Me oh my, she nearly got all against her, until she explained why she said so.

“Children get ill this season anyway. When tehy all get ill at the same time, we can take it easy at school for a week and then the majority is back and we can take on the curriculum again.”

Hmm..maybe she has a point.

But she didn’t consider the feelings of a child that doesn’t feel well.

Let the children play

I love the music of Santana and at certain times the music pops-up and draws my attention to soemthing important.

Today I was talking with one of the parents of my group of dyslectic children.
She’s a very nice woman, who “seems to have accepted the dyslexia of her child”, as the file stated.

She was very interested in what we’re teaching her child and she smiled when she saw the little booklets and the leaflets the children use.
No hesitation was shown to ask questions and I was happy to answer them all.

Then suddenly I heard the music of Santana in my mind “Let the children play”.
It hit me that the child is growing up with very caring and loving parents, but that maybe there’s an imbalance in the little child’s life which isn’t good.

The coming spring was a nice subject.
“Does your child like spring? Does your child have favorite outside activities?”

Turned out that mom didn’t like the fact that the child was playing outside the garden and that they never went on a bicycle tour and such.

“Let the children play”…

It was a nice moment to tell the mother that a good brain development also involved discovering the world outside the garden, meeting other children and telling afterwards about the experiences.

I saw that never before someone pointed this out to the mother.

We agreed that she will create more situations that enable her child to tell what it has done.
That way it learns to formulate better sentences, to summarise and to translate feelings into words.

First play then work

Today we had snow in the morning and children inside looking with such a craving faces outside that we decided to give them half an hour to play outside.

Good decision.

By the time they went inside again the snow was melting, they were cold and after making mugs with hot chocolate for them and coffee for us they worked all day as hard as possible.

I remember my own schooltime.
Our favorite teacher did the same and she got the best results of all.

It’s a pity she doesn’t live anymore, otherwise I would have told her what happened today.
She would have smiled her wise smile. I’m sure of that.

Oscars – wealth vs poverty

Yesterday a friend called.
Like me she’s been helping an old woman for years now.
We don’t talk about it often, because we each have our own bond with our person and both old women have other difficulties, even though both are lonely and both have to deal with physical limitations.

I’m getting the groceries for my old lady for years now.
She recently started.

I didn’t expect her call, and I was very surprised to hear her being so emotional.

Turned out that her lady called her today, which she never does, because the community nurse had forgotten to order new nappies and she had none left.

So my friend took the papers from the insurance and went to the open pharmacy which was quite far away, and they refused to help her.
From there she called the emergency service for weekend care. No help either.
She called a friend at the hospital, but she didn’t dare to take a few to give to her, and at the old people’s home they told her that they were not for people who had no economical bond with the home.

So she called me.

We both went to my woman and even though she’s not incontinent at the moment she has some spare ones. I knew that.
We three had tears in our eyes when just when we had asked her for the spare ones the posh Oscar program started on TV.

“These people don’t know what’s important”, my old lady said.
“They wear such expensive clothes that one dress probably pays for all the dresses in my whole life.
And someone out there doesn’t even have the necessary care items to be at home with a little bit of dignity.”

I couldn’t have said it better.

winter..again???

I really thought we were slowly moving into spring.

Wrong!

When I woke up I heard some birds, but when I stepped outside I could only think they were talking to each other about the weather. Soooo cold.

I was happy to bring the groceries to the old lady and sit down with her with a cup of coffee and a piece of applepie. Took quite a while to get warm again.

We didn’t get the snow that was announced, but I heard the wind and lots of rain and hail during the night.

Instead of me going home, my brother came over in the afternoon and we went to town to buy him some clothes. He needs to attend a wedding and he’ll look very handsome.

As a thank you he invited me for a small dinner in a very cozy restaurant.
Ofcourse we had steak and mushrooms, his favorite, and my favorite ice with chocolate.
I told him he was free to ask me to go shopping with him every saturday.

My mom asked him to take a heavy bag to me.
It was full with cans and pots, so there’s no much cooking needed next week.
She even gave some chicken and meatloaf.

I’m happy with it.
Some days I’m really tired when I come home and I don’t always feel like cooking.

Grinding with…. #1

Posted on | March 5, 2010 | No Comments

Imagine the old days.

A table, a little girl and her grandma.
Coffeebeans, the grinder, and the soft smell of cookies.

The perfect moment to talk a bit and put in the past what belongs in the past.

Like Laane writes:

Grind away what happened this week

so you can start your weekend a bit better.

  • The past week I had some meetings at school which took a lot of time and resulted in more papers in files, but in nothing else.
  • Only half of the people who should vote turned up. They never hesitate to complain about the councils though.
  • I’ve won a voucher for a film that is not shown here. I have to go to Amsterdam and I won’t. gave away the voucher and he didn’t even say thank you.
  • They’ve changed the hairshampoo I like best.
  • My lost my watch yesterday. I think the band broke. The watch wasn’t expensive, but I don’t have the time to shop. (Now I have no time at all. LOL!)

So, and now it’s weekend!

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!

And about EC

Posted on | March 4, 2010 | 4 Comments

Suddenly winter is back.
The temperatures are going down and it’s even told that we’ll get real snow tomorrow night.

If that’s going to happen I won’t leave here to go home this weekend.
I’ve been travelling through cold weather far too much this winter

It’s not the only thing that I don’t want to do.
The past days I’ve felt unhappy to do my EC dropping.
Some nice blogs have gone.

Finally EC is clearing up the bugs and such. But they also announced that one isn’t allowed to have more than 100.000 EC in the account.

Well, I guess I’m going to give mine to: Action for Austism so they can be used to promote autism awareness.

Maybe we should start Autism Awareness activities next week instead of april 1, so we can spend those EC’s on a worthy cause.

Hmmm…isn’t a bad idea, is it?

local elections are over

Posted on | March 3, 2010 | No Comments

The local elections are over.

We voted, with a skarf over our heads to protest, and that was it.

Now we have to wait until all the votes are counted.

It’s clear that there are quite some people who have voted for the PVV in the 2 cities where they took part. It’s a huge worry.

Interesting is, that most of my friend agree that they want to move to another country when it’ll become the largest party.
I will too.

local elections

Posted on | March 2, 2010 | No Comments

Tomorrow we have to go to vote.

I’m not completely sure which party to vote for, because at the local elections the subjects parties talk about are limited and they agree on 95% of them.

At the local level some parties are doing a lot of good work whereas they can’t accomplish anything valuable at the national level and vise versa.

Well, I’ve limited my choice to two and at the local level it doesn’t matter which one is chosen. Lucky me.

I’ll go to vote with a sjawl/skarf over my head.
It’s a protest against the ultra right movement of Geert Wilders, who wants to ban al headwear for women inside the council buildings and at organisations that receive council grants.
His aim is to forbid muslim women to wear their religious symbol.
He won’t forbid keppeltjes, crosses and other religious symbols, so he’s discriminating.
And he is telling all Dutch women what they can’t wear.

I’m sorry, but I want to wear something over my hair when I want to.

My mother did, my gram did and all the women before them did.
It was even part of our national costume.

So voting it will be, with my hair covered the way I want.

closing ceremony of our olympics

Posted on | March 1, 2010 | No Comments

Yes, of our olympics.

We had a project at school involving all classes and all the disciplines of the olympics.

Today we had the closing ceremony of the project.

All groups represented one or two disciplines and showed us what they wanted us to know.

So some showed the rules, others the movements, and others the clothes and equipment.
Added to that some famous names, and ofcourse a contest of which group represented the sport best.

It was not decided by school, but by a vote of the parents and all those interested to vote.

That group received tickets to the skating hall and they had to take the pledge, representing the whole school.

They pledged fair play during gymnastics and playing in and outside school, no bullying, degrading, etc. and to help those children who are not able to be winners, to become a winner in their own lives.

Because the closing ceremoney at TV was so great, we showed it on the large computerscreen and when the concert started we put the speakers on loud and we had a great party.

Never had so much fun with the children.

I was lucky that the person who had to check my qualifications as a teacher was still there.
The main part of this whole event was my idea, with a lot of assistance of a good friend, and because the bullying project was integrated in the event I got a very good mark.

Now I’m going to take a quiet time.
I’m soooo tired!!!
